Martin, 28, is now officially in line for a shot at one of the belts held by undisputed champion Devin Haney. However, there were noticeable weaknesses in his performance tonight, as the 32-year-old Harutyunyan’s style occasionally posed problems for Martin.
When Martin let his hands go, he looked sharp, but Harutyunyan’s effective head movement at times caused Martin to hesitate, and Martin frequently struggled to cut off the ring.
That said, when Martin turned up the aggression, the dynamic changed. He had three standout rounds that significantly tilted the punch stats in his favor, while the rest of the fight remained close, with Harutyunyan clearly winning some rounds, though not as dominantly as Martin in his best moments.
This fight leaves some questions about whether Martin is ready to compete at the elite lightweight level, which is why climbing the ranks is essential. He learned valuable lessons and now knows he needs to make adjustments to compete with the top fighters at 135 pounds.
“My reaction time just wasn’t there tonight,” Martin admitted after the fight. “He’s definitely a tough opponent.”
Martin couldn’t pinpoint the reason for his timing issues, though it’s possible Harutyunyan’s style disrupted his rhythm.
“He’s tough, I hit him with some good shots,” Martin added. “He stayed on his feet. I respect him because he took some big punches. I didn’t land as many body shots as usual, but it was a good fight.”
“I still want to face all the champions. I want all the top guys,” Martin declared.
Harutyunyan also weighed in: “Congratulations to Frank Martin. He’s a good fighter, but I saw every punch he threw. In the last round, my eye got hurt badly, and I had to take a few seconds to recover. I think that round cost me the fight. It was just my eye, and it feels pretty bad. I’ll need to have it checked by a doctor.”
“I don’t agree with the decision, but I want a rematch. If possible, I’d fight him again,” he added. “He’s just a fighter; he’s not Errol Spence. I’m a big fan of Errol Spence. My goal is to become a world champion or at least challenge for a world title—maybe against Devin Haney or Gervonta Davis.
